Chosen Book Launch Party Fun

DSC_02491

What a fun time we had at my #Chosen book launch Saturday evening. There was a good turnout and everyone who stayed for the interactive readings took the stage. Definitely some undiscovered talent in the house!

I turned a few select scenes into scripts for the stage readings and got everyone involved. People left excited to read the book and find out more about the scenes the watched or helped act out.

If you are thinking about a book launch party, I encourage you to consider ways to get the audience involved. Planning a book launch party can be tough enough without all the pressure of reading from a book  yourself. Scripting it out helped take the pressure and focus off of me, the author, and put it where I wanted it to be – the people who came out for the book.

Still dreaming about writing your book or trying to figure out what you are going to write? Get my book FOCUS: How to Write a Four Week First Draft and get focused to finish that first draft.

Normal? What is That?

index

I’ve never been normal so don’t plan to start now. ‪#‎metaphysics‬ ‪#‎scifi ‪#‎paranormal‬ ‪#‎diversityinthought‬ ‪#‎diverseabilities‬ ‪#‎diverseappearances‬ intrigue me so I bring it into what I write. You want one flavor, look elsewhere. I’m bringing all the flavors. ‪#‎psychicmedium‬ ‪#‎writer‬ ‪#‎justsaying‬ ‪#‎iamwhoiam‬ ‪#‎lovingme‬ ‪#‎canyouhandlethis‬ ‪#‎epic‬

Why? Because life is complicated and so are the people in it. There is no one size fits all and barely a one size fits most. We’re in this pressure cooker together and in order to make it through it takes work. Work that must be done individually and collectively. I’m not an island and neither are you. I love this reality. I love being connected not just with my fellow humans sharing this planet but with something greater that we cannot sense with the limited abilities of our physical senses.

Thankfully, I’m not ‘normal’ and see things, feel things, and know things differently. I appreciate the differences I bring and the differences each unique creation brings. There is absolutely something special and worthy in all of us that yearns to be expressed and I try to capture that in the stories I tell. Whether it is in my epic series Chosen or in the paranormal thriller novella Crossed: The Karma Crusades, or my latest novella Out of the Woods you’ll find that each person must tap into something special.

I hope you’ll enjoy the adventures I bring and all the flavors.

Sleepless in Atlanta

images-30

Last night I made myself turn off the computer by 11:30 and was proud of my resolve.

I would not stay up until 2am trying to squeeze out just a little more creativity.

Especially since my dear husband is traveling this week and I am supposed to be up at 6:30 to get the kids up and off to school. I know a lot of WP members are too young to have to worry about that, but that’s notthe case for me.

I got ready for bed and by 11:45 I had crawled, tired and ready, into bed. I read for a few minutes and by midnight the screen and room were dark and ready for my slumber.

Restless and still quite awake, I peeked at the clock, 12:10. I considered staying up to give my husband a wakeup call at 12:45 since he’s in Europe. But, that would mean staying up another thirty five minutes. No, I would go to sleep.

But go to sleep I did not. All the thoughts of stories and plots and decisions around self publishing versus finding a publisher kept my mind on overdrive. 12:20am. I decided to just look up the reviews of one of the imprints I was thinking about. Maybe I would stay up for that 12:45 call, but no, I’m tired, I thought. 12:27.

I told myself to try and sleep. I started trying to push the thoughts out but it was like pushing on soft butter, they just spread. So I was forced to get up and grab my phone again to write a paragraph to insert into my Out of the Woods story. I am now going to sleep I said once again.

I dozed lightly only for the thought of calling my husband to jar me back awake at 12:47. I quickly called him and after a couple of minutes I hung up. Sleep would finally come.

I mean really, what’s the point of going to bed on time if I can’t sleep?

I tossed, turned, pulled covers up, pushed them down, fluffed my pillow, added a pillow, got rid of a pillow, and pondered the uselessness of it all until sleep finally rescued me from myself after 2am.

Do you have any idea how much I could have written in that time?

But tonight, I will go to bed on time and go to sleep. (Insert Hypnotic suggestion).

Taking the Time to Write it Right (Write, Edit, Revise, Repeat)

On December 26th I had the idea to write a book.  It was actually the idea to write a story across two or three full length novels.  Something hit me and said, ‘Yes. You can do this.’  I was nervous and hesitant but after a few days decided that yes, I could do it.  I started the novel before the end of the year.  Less than six weeks later I had my first draft of the first novel and had started the second.  I thought I was going to be published in just a couple of months and then reality threw egg on my face.

In my excitement over completing that first draft I thought it was pretty awesome. I thought I must be pretty amazing.  Ha!  I asked a few people to read it for feedback only to have to ask them NOT to read it.  Editing! Hello!  Editing!  I had great feedback from one friend that along with general editing and revisions I was able to incorporate.

More than a month later I am still editing.  I’m on round three of reading and revising and now recognize what my English teachers tried to teach me.  Writing is a process. Really. It is a process.  I’m not one for patience, but I have to be patient with myself and with this work if I want to produce something I’m proud of and that people will want to read.  Why put all that time and effort in if you don’t want it to be good.  I mean really good?

So my daydreams of having my first book out by late April has turned into the wishful thinking of having it out sometime this Summer.  This is of course after the current revision process and then having some beta readers give me feedback and my husband critique it and then revising it again.  But that’s just the actual book part.  There’s making a cover, marketing, promotions, press releases, and of course a book signing party that will also take time, in the midst of finalizing book one and beginning the edits on book 2 (yes, I finished the first draft of book 2 as well. I’m a little crazy but I was rolling).

So naïve excitement and egoism has transformed into moderated excitement and realism.  A book isn’t born in a couple of months and that’s okay.  I want to do it the right way.
